January 28, 2008Remember the other day when I wrote about the organization that we were able to help start, Imagine A Cure? Well, since then we have had a great response to the site and the organization, that we decided to make it a little easier to spread the word.
Below you will find some code that you can copy and paste into your own blogs to help get the word out. We are looking forward to seeing God move in this.

Copy and paste this code.
Thanks again.

January 27, 2008Today was a good day. Why you ask? In case you did not know, there are a few guys in MercyMe that are huge, huge baseball fans. And one of the “perks” of being in a band is that you sometimes get to meet some of your heroes. And every once in a while it goes farther than just meeting them…you actually become friends. Can you believe that?!?!?
Well today was a good day. We have had the pleasure of calling Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals a friend. Albert and his family are amazing, godly people. He has a heart of gold, and he truly has a desire to see God glorified.
Well, tonight we are doing a show in St. Louis, so we were able to hook up with Albert for lunch at his restaurant “Pujols 5.” That’s right, today was a good day. Now brothers and sisters try to understand how hard it is not to freak out. I am not one to get star struck, but I am a sports nut! We are talking childhood dreams here. And to meet godly athletes is even better! Oh yes, my dear friends, today…was a good day.

Here is Albert bugging me for my autograph…again.

January 27, 2008Seeing the rest of the band working hard towards revealing all of their gear secrets, I thought I would let you in on my most coveted secrets.

I only use the Shure KSM9 wireless microphone with an Ultimate Brand mic stand. Trust me when I say, they seriously make a difference.

This is a water bottle: I drink water during all of my shows. I am not concerned so much with the brand as long as it is wet. If I did have to choose a brand, I would most likely go with Sam’s choice water from Wal-Mart…mmmmm smooth and refreshing.

Being a man of largeness, I also use a towel to keep sweat from falling in my eyes during the show. Sweat is bad enough, but when mixed with hair gel it hurts like crazy.
So there you have it. I know I risk the chance of many, many people taking my secrets and becoming professional singers, but I am willing to take such a risk.
Sing on my friends…sing on.

January 24, 2008Ok…. here by popular demand this is the beginning of the Gear Blog…..
Now these pictures came from my Treo, (which let’s all admit it… camera phones in low lighting…. horrible, right?) so let’s not waste time discussing the poor quality of the photos… I’ll try and get some higher quality pics up soon. Also, There are are a lot of photos missing… ie, Barry’s amps/pedals/guitars…we’ll let him make that post. Matter of fact, all the other guys can post their own stuff. Feel free to ask questions or tell me about your gear…I love finding out about new stuff!!!

Pedal Board: This is my current Winter Jam pedal board. Note the Cusack Pedals…THESE THING ROCK!!!!! Also…The TC Nova Delay…This is the newest addition to the arsenal and is THE best Delay pedal I’ve ever played.

Gabriel Voxer 18: I LOVE THIS AMP!!! Gabi is still building these amps in his Garage and the sound is amazing. So much so that Barry has recently invested in the 36 watt version of this amp, which is 18 watts. MercyMe’s guitarsenal is entirely powered by Gabriel Amps on this Winter Jam tour, and WE LOVE IT!!!!

This is Wes…he’s our stage manager/guitar tech/barista/friend. He’s currently modeling one of my current favorite rockers…It’s a Supro DualTone. You can find these on the web. Bruce Zinky has single handedly revived the Supro amp and guitar line….ok….he couldn’t do it without Annette, but either way…these guitars and amps are unbelievable. Mine is #10, #1 belongs to the Rolling Stones. Don’t let this scare you…the sticker price isn’t all that bad, but you will have to wait a while for one of these masterpieces as they are all hand built.

Gibsons, Fenders, and a Supro…life is good.

My tele that I butchered and Steve Anderson @ Anderson Guitar Gallery in Frisco, Tx. salvaged her for me. Now it’s one of my favorites. It was a standard Tele, now it’s loaded w/ Seymour Duncans and a Bigsby….Twangy Baby!
To Be Continued…

January 24, 2008So this past year, MercyMe had the priveledge of attending the Grammys. I must admit it was pretty cool. The show itself was great, but my favorite part of the night was the after party. Our record label is affiliated with Columbia records, so we got the invite. I enjoyed myself because I am a people watcher, and there is no greater place to watch people than in Hollywood. Let me just say the night did not disappoint. Watching people is one thing, but actually talking to them is another story. It is just plain weird to try to engage with some of these folks. But I had a secret weapon…a flat Stanley. For those of you who have no clue what I am talking about, let me explain. A flat Stanley is a paper cut out figure that a grade school class will make and send to people all over the place in hopes of getting photos of ol’ Stanley in different parts of the globe. Then, when Stanley returns home, the kids giggle and snort as they admire all the places their special traveler has been. All this to say, a good friend of mine asked me to take flat Stanley with me for his daughter’s class. I must say this worked to my advantage. You never really realize how much confidence a little paper doll can give a person until you try it. I was fearless. I approached everyone the same. I would start off by asking if they knew what a flat Stanley was. If they said yes, then it was on! If they said no, then we would just stare at each other uncomfortably until one of us slithered away. People saying no was almost as funny as people saying yes. I asked Tony Bennett if he would mind taking a picture with flat Stanley and he said, “sure send him over.” I got so nervous, I said ok, walked away as if I were going to get some guy named Stanley, and never came back. Sorry Mr. Bennett. To make a long story longer, here are some pics with yours truly, flat Stanley and some of my closest friends. Enjoy.

Ps. On a side note, the place was pretty crowded, so I jumped in the middle of Paris Hilton’s entourage to get to the bathroom quicker. Ha ha ha ha I really did!

Kevin, from the TV show “The Office.” I guess I should have looked up his real name.

Isaac Slade from the band “The Fray.” Apparently Flat Stanley was thirsty.

Here we are with Chris Daughtry. Look at the size of my head…freaking huge!!!!

The reason I look so weird is because Carrie Underwood just came up and took Stanley after my picture with Chris Daughtry. Seems that Stanley and I were so famous that the little people were just standing in line to get our picture. Kidding of course.

Flat Stanley, Weird Al and Large Bart. The perfect trio.

So what happens when you buy your son a Lightning McQueen tent for his Birthday?
He asks you to play in it with him.
Unfortunately, he doesnt realize that Im to big to play in it. But being the good father that I am, I did my best to climb through the tent. But for some reason for which I dont understand, I just cant fit. I guess its part of life. You get older, you get bigger and you cant play in a tent anymore. So my lessoned learned on this day is to never buy toys that require you to get down on all fours and make a fool of yourself. And if you do, make sure the whole is big enough for a grown man to get through.
Happy Birthday Levi!

So last week in our 3 days off, Abby scheduled us to have a little family photo shoot. The kiddos are 3 and 2, and we just wanted to have some pictures of them at this age. She heard about this new photographer here in Greenville that has quite a reputation. He’s our own Jimmy Bryson. That’s right folks…our keyboard player is moonlighting as a photographer these days.
The deal is…He’s REALLY good. So from 10am till about 4pm we hung out and tried our best to entertain Ben and Millie. Ben was mostly entertained by Thomas and his Friends…(they’re 2 they’re 4 they’re 6 they’re 8….) Both kids did great, but Millie is at home in front of the camera…the girl is a DIVA!!!!
Here’s one of my favorite pics of the day….hope you enjoy it.

One of the hardest things I have ever gone through was when my oldest son, Sam, was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at the age of two. I will never forget the day the doctor told me that my son had an incurable disease. My heart broke into a million pieces. Nothing hurts greater than when something happens to your family. I have never felt so helpless than when my son wants me to “fix” it, and all I can do is hold him and say, “I’m sorry”. Or at least I thought that was all I could do.
We have since started an organization called “Imagine A Cure,” and it is my greatest desire to find a cure for my son. “Imagine A Cure” financially supports cutting edge organizations like JDRF ( juvenile diabetes research foundation) who are determined to work themselves out of a job by finding a cure. Not only are we trying to make a difference financially, but more importantly we are trying to make a difference through prayer, and we need your help. If you are able to give financially then praise God, but all of my fellow believers can pray. And that is exactly what I am asking you to do.
Pray for the hearts and minds of the scientist and doctors trying to find a cure. Pray for everyone who is experiencing this terrible disease first hand. Pray that God find greater glory through a cure. And, at the risk of sounding selfish, pray for my family. Pray for Mommy and Daddy to be patient with this “new normal.” Pray for Sam’s health. And more than anything else, pray that, regardless of a cure, God be glorified through Sam’s life.
