Welcome to the North! I still get laughed at when I call it “soda”. And I went to college in Texas and got used to asking for a “coke”.
My husband and big kids are looking forward to the concert tonight. I, since every teenager in town will be there, will be at home with the little kids. But I’ll survive on some Cover Tune Grab Bags and maybe some classic “Spoken For”.
Oh, and just why did you bring the snow with you????
I think its a northern thing, I’m from the south and we have always called it coke. A lady I knew from New York called it pop and my cousin who lived most of her life in St Louis called it sodie. The first time I heard her say it I had no idea what she meant after she told me I said “you mean a coke?” Funny how different areas call the same product by different names and sometimes the culture is even a bit different. But as they say, that is what makes the world go round. Or is that a southern saying too?
I’m in New England and everyone here says “soda” – is there a way to isolate which regions typically use “soda”, “pop”, or “coke”? I would be very interested in such a discussion…
When my brother and my mom moved to IL from CA, they were looked at funny when they asked for a soda or coke. I laugh at them all the time when they start talking Midwest lingo…but they had to learn it to be able to communicate, lol.
THANK YOU!!! It’s Coke. Not pop, not soda, and definitely not soda pop. It’s just coke…whatever kind you’d like. In fact, I believe that’s written down in the constitution somewhere.
You know who else refered to it as pop? The Nazis. In fact, I believe Hitler loved the word “pop” so much he swore to rid the world of all “coke” sayers, such as the Jews, who were a decent group of people who just wanted to have a coke and have a smile.
i totally agree with that. i am originally from the south. IT IS – what “coke” do you want? who is bringing the “cokes”? everyone up here in yankeeville call is pop or soda.
And then there is MOXIE. The first and still being sold carbonated soft drink in the world. If you’ve tasted MOXIE you are amoung the lucky few!!
Can anyone tell me where it’s still being sold?
I call it pop, but, i usually ask for specific brand names. Pepsi, Cherry Coke, Coke, Dr. Pepper, Mr. Pibb. I prefer Root beer personally But if you go into most restaurants and ask for a coke and they only sell Pepsi products, you will NOT get a coke, you will get a pepsi
Maybe they were referring to the person selling it because Mom couldn’t be there:) Really, I have heard it both ways, I am from the Cincinnati area and we mainly say whatever the name of the product is, but there are soooo many others who do say soda!
I am from Texas, San Antonio, and I have always said soda. I have not even heard it called just coke….My cousins live in St. Louis and they call it pop…just like they say yous, what is yous…instead of saying are you…funny world we live in!!
by the way just for the record my favorite soda is Mr. Pibb, bummer they don’t sell it no more but when I see it a restaurant you know that is my drink…
When I visited Austin, TX, I had the hardest time even FINDING a restaurant that served Pepsi products. Maybe that’s why it’s just “Coke;” Coca-Cola owns the South!
I just got home to Helena, MT, after seeing the Rock ‘n Worship Show in Billings last night. Five powerful bands and thousands of attendees joined to worship God; it was a truly awe inspiring evening.
I moved from Southern California where we said “soda” to Illinois where they said “pawp” (add nasal twang). It was in 1983 and all the kids made fun of my Valley Girl accent anyway so I quickly learned to “Do as the Romans do”. Now, “soda” is something I put in cookies.
Come back to Salt Lake! We love you and are starved for good Christian music!!!
i don’t understand Jamie’s comment. she actually tried finding a pepsi???
Down here, the worst words you could ever hear are “sorry, we don’t have coke. is pepsi okay?” it really takes all you have not to walk out right then and go somewhere else.
I grew up in the South, where we always called it “Coke.” I had a friend who moved here from Oklahoma, and we made fun of her for saying pop. There’s an interesting map of what people call a generic soft drink in different regions of the country. It’s at http://popvssoda.com:2998/.
Ahem. Josh, “Jamie” is my nickname for “James,” so let’s lay off the “she,” shall we?
Just to set the record straight, I was looking for some Mountain Dew (a Pepsi product) in TX restaurants. “No, miss; Sprite is NOT the same thing.” So wrong on so many different levels…
I grew up on “pop” in Nebraska, but when I moved to the Northwest, it was more like 50/50 “pop” or “soda.” The whole “Coke” thing in the South was a scary, cult-like experience for me…
Hi we call it “pop” in British Columbia, Canada,eh. LOL. I think I’ve called it “pop” my whole life. I find it kinda weird that you ask for a coke and then are asked “what kind? You guys enjoy Seattle tonight , I can’t make it ,wish I could. But please oh please come back soon!!!
I was raised in Tulsa, OK and we called it POP there. I still call it POP and always will. It is a regional thing, so no one needs to get themselves in a dither about it.
Seems while living in Greenville, TX, some called “POP” ….
Kool-Aid, which I thought was funny…. So there you go.
It is a regional thing. The diversity of being an American.
Not only did we grow up (northern VA) calling it ‘coke’, but we had a counter in the local drugstore that served coke in all different flavors that they added in. Sometimes we’d even get peanuts in our coke. The only thing we didn’t call coke was root beer, as in root beer float.
Since those days, I have lived all over the US, and have been teased for calling it coke instead of pop…teased for calling it pop instead of soda…teased for calling it soda instead of pop…it’s a vicious cycle. ’specially since we all know the only correct term is ‘coke’.
Thats too funny!!!! people from the north i think call it “pop” i’ve lived in Florida for 35 yrs and it’s soda. i guess in the old days they called it soda pop… but again ,soda is first tee hee …. but again what if you drink pepsi so ya can’t call it coke … just say soda its easier
Here in southern Ohio we call it Pop. So when my 7yr old nephew was visiting from South Carolina and was asked if he wanted a Pop he ducked and said “Don’t hit me!”. LOL
lol…when i was a kid(im sure your laughing) i called it pop….now its SODA!

Haha..I am from Southwest Virginia and we call it pop. If you asked for a coke here, that’s exactly what you would get.
I’m in New England and everyone here says “soda” – is there a way to isolate which regions typically use “soda”, “pop”, or “coke”? I would be very interested in such a discussion…

All of us in the north call it pop. I would probally look at people funny if I heard them call it soda.

In Minnesota we call it “pop” but my friend in Mass. calls it “tonic” now I find that really silly!
The super amazing cool people call it pop.
Here in New Brunswick (the province in Canada, not the city in New Jersey), we call it pop.
THANK YOU!!! It’s Coke. Not pop, not soda, and definitely not soda pop. It’s just coke…whatever kind you’d like. In fact, I believe that’s written down in the constitution somewhere.
Growing up in Ohio it was pop, now here in NY state – I get crazy looks if I don’t refer to it as soda. Definately not a “northern” thing.
Jeremy Camp blogged that same sign, ‘cept he was more fond of it.
being from western Texas, I call it coke too.
It’s a coke…nothing else…if you call it something else, YOUR WRONG…
You know who else refered to it as pop? The Nazis. In fact, I believe Hitler loved the word “pop” so much he swore to rid the world of all “coke” sayers, such as the Jews, who were a decent group of people who just wanted to have a coke and have a smile.
I call it Pepsi!
i totally agree with that. i am originally from the south. IT IS – what “coke” do you want? who is bringing the “cokes”? everyone up here in yankeeville call is pop or soda.

It’s pop here in the midwest.
Always been Pop in the Midwest…. Or Soda (but I got that from my east coast friends)
It’s pop in the west
Strange. I’m in the Northwest and it’s SODA!
