Before And After – “Sing”

This one is a doozy.  While recording “Coming Up To Breathe”, I had a song idea that I was especially fond of. The band was not too fond of the original idea, and looking back, I can see why.  However, while working at the studio one night, Barry saw a vision of hope within my poor little song, so we finished the song together at about 4 in the morning.

The good news: The song turned out better than I could have ever dreamed, and we were able to record it with the London Symphony.

The bad news: it still did not make the record. It was merely an exclusive track whenever you purchased “Coming Up To Breathe” from a certain retail chain. I still love the song, and think we should have put it on the album. Oh well, you can’t win them all.

Before And After – “Sanctified”

OK so this song came from two different ideas. Sometimes you have song ideas that just feel “average” but when you combine the stronger parts of each song, hopefully you get a better song…hopefully.

Before And After – “I Know”

October 7, 20088 Comments

This week’s installment of “Before and After” is a song called “I Know” off of the album “All That is Within Me.”

Whenever we start writing a song, it usually has some strange title that only the band would understand, until I finally write lyrics and the real title comes about. This song was called “WB pop song” for quite some time. So let me explain the process of giving a demo its name. It goes something like this: “Hey that song sounds like one of those songs you hear on one of those teenage WB tv shows.” Hence the name “WB pop song.” Also notice I am still mumbling like I always do.

Enjoy

Before And After – “Goodbye Ordinary”

October 2, 200821 Comments

Hey folks how’s it going? Well it is time to add a new segment to our blog called, “Before and After”. We thought it would be funny, and cool to show you the difference between our first ideas for a song and the finished product. Sometimes there are very little changes, and sometimes it is a night and day difference. Hopefully our first one will explain itself.

The first recording, the “before”, is our earliest demo of what is now known as “Goodbye Ordinary.” Notice whenever we start writing a song, I simply mumble noises to get a feel for what the melody might sound like. Then, when we are happy with the general idea, I go back and complete the lyrics. A little out of the ordinary, but I say GOODBYE ORDINARY! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

What is amazing about the demos, is that the guys are playing it for one of the first times with no fixes, and they rock…in a very raw sort of way. Oh and the second recording is the finished product, the “after” if you will, in case you did not figure it out.
