The Band

Barry
Bio

Barry Bio PhotoI was given my first guitar by my parents when I was about 13 or 14. I started taking lessons immediately as well as learning a lot on my own which pretty much gave way to me just teaching myself. Well…sort of. Me, Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen would have lessons together everyday after school. I learned a lot from them and all of the other music of the 70’s. I didn’t know about Christian music then, in fact, there weren’t nearly as many artists as there are now.

So I started playing in cover bands for school dances and clubs and wherever we could play. After that chapter in my life had closed a friend played me a song by a Christian band, Undercover. I had no idea this type of music existed. So, in short, I packed up the car, moved to Nashville and for the next 14 years or so played for artists and bands which are too many to name until I joined MercyMe in 2003. I’ve been playing a long time but find that there is still something to learn. I feel blessed every day to be able to do what I love.

What for you is a good show and/or what is your favorite thing about playing?
A show could be going wrong in all directions (musically, technically) but it just takes that one thing, which could be someone has been touched by a song or something that was said to make it all worth it. Or, It may be that we all end a particular song like we said we were going to. Also, a good show for me is to not break any strings. It’s been quite some time so I’ve got a pretty good run going.

Bart
Bio

Bart Bio PhotoI am a product of the system! What I mean is I grew up on Christian music. I was that kid who, while singing in front of the mirror playing a mean tennis racket , imagined singing with my favorite Christian artist rather than some big rock star. Now some could say that was just the beginning of what would be a major calling in my life. I tend to think I just needed to play outside more and have fewer imaginary friends. Regardless how you choose to see it, this is who I am.

The first album I ever bought with my own money was Petra “More Power to Ya.” Actually bought it twice because I literally wore the first one out. Because of that record, I became consumed with CCM. Growing up, I would spend every penny of my allowance on whatever music the local Christian bookstore carried. Did anyone else own every Stephen Curtis Chapman and Wayne Watson accompaniment tape and sing every chance the church doors were open, or was that just me? I also had a mullet and wore a sweater vest so that I would be taken seriously. I remember watching my girlfriend in seventh grade sing some First Call tune, and knowing I was in love…well, as in love as you can be for a seventh grader. She is now my wife by the way.

I remember joining my first praise band. I remember doing my first church camp. I remember when we started MercyMe. I remember making our first independent album. I remember the first time I led a kid to Christ at one of our concerts. I remember the first time I heard one of our songs on the radio. I cried. Not because it was on the radio, but because my dad believed it would happen one day. I am a product of the system to say the least. Christian music has played an enormous role in who I am today, and I am forever grateful.

Jim Bio PhotoMy parents asked me if I’d like to take piano lessons when I was 7 years old. I took them thru my freshman year in college. I played in several different bands before we started MercyMe.

After I discovered I didn’t want to go to school for piano, I went to audio engineering school. Following graduation I worked in a studio in Oklahoma City for 5 years. After that, I freelanced engineered for a few years while MercyMe started playing. I’ve been playing for 33 years. Yikes!

Where were you born and where have you lived?
Born in Joplin, MO, grew up in Clinton, MO and have lived in Orlando, FL, Edmond, OK, Nashville, TN, Arlington, TX, Fort Worth, TX & Greenville, TX

Best childhood memory:
I don’t know if I can remember that far back! Lots of memories with my parents. I always loved the 4 of July. It was the only time I could blow stuff up without getting in a ton of trouble! I miss bottle rockets.

Most embarrassing moment:
Accidentally burping in a microphone while singing a solo at church in my grade school choir. Did I mention that it was live on the radio too? The motto for this is: Don’t drink Dr. Pepper before you sing.

What are you most known for saying?
Something intelligent I’m sure! ;)

If the bus were burning, what is the one musical instrument you would grab?
Certainly not my B3 organ. It’s too heavy. Ummm…. maybe the accordion because it’s light.

Favorite Quote:
“I love you Daddy” as said by my 4 1/2 yr old Riley and “Car, Vrrrrmmmmmm  vrrrrmmmmmmm” as said by Jack who’s 2.

Favorite color(s):
Green, blue….. no yellow! Aaaaaaaaaaaa……. (quote from Monty Python).

Hobbies and/or favorite thing(s) to do in your leisure time:

Hanging out with my family and watching Riley & Jack pick up bugs and misc. amphibians to scare my wife. Anything to do with auto racing (collecting memorabilia, watching races, and attending them). I’m really getting into Photography. I’m even starting to take pictures of other people’s families. Yikes.

Ummmm…. see the previous question. In case you didn’t notice, I like racing!

Favorite Movie(s):
I think it might be anything with Jack Black, Tim Robbins or Morgan Freeman.

Favorite Book:
Do auto racing magazines count?

Favorite Cartoon Character:
Probably The Tick & any classic Tom & Jerry, etc.

What, for you, is a good show and/or what is your favorite thing about playing?
A good show is when something of mine doesn’t break, catch on fire, or fall off a keyboard stand! My favorite thing about playing is seeing a different crowd every night. Watching them sing along and worship makes all the long hours, crowded airline flights and being away from my family much easier.

Bio

Mike Bio PhotoI grew up in a Christian home, but not a terribly musical home. My parents, however, saw that I loved music from a young age and REALLY supported that. I started playing guitar when I was in 7th grade then quit 2 weeks later. I picked it up again when I was 15 and have been playing ever since. We started MercyMe when I was 19, so I didn’t have a whole lot of years under my belt, but no better place to learn how to play than in front of a crowd, right!

After a few years on the road, my life TOTALLY changed when we played a show in West Monroe, LA. That was the day I laid eyes on the most beautiful girl on planet earth. Not long after that, somehow, I suckered her in to marrying me, and now 5 1/2 years later we’ve got the 2 smartest kids in the world…don’t believe me, ask their mom!

Bio

Nathan Bio PhotoEverything about me is a bit of a mystery. Only those close to me know my origins. I am strange and unpredictable. Often known to ramble off some old quote no one knows only to then laugh at myself and carry on with the task at hand. I try to be a deep thinker, but usually only end up confusing myself and others with thoughts that are either brilliant or humorous. Not sure which… Okay, well maybe I am not that interesting.

I am a normal guy from Missouri that gets to play music with an exceptional group of guys that strive to honor God with everything we do. I love my family and enjoy playing music. If you want to know more about me you will have to catch me and ask!

Bio

Robby Bio PhotoI started playing drums when I was 7 years old. I was drawn to the drums at church and the drummer would let me sit behind them and pound away. Apparently I had a little rhythm because he told my parents that I did and not to quench it. So they didn’t. In fact, they bought me a drum set.

I started playing drums in church with my dad when I was 10, but didn’t really know what being a musician was or how the drums were to be used until I was about 19. All together I have been playing for about 23 years.
